How Do I Participate In This Field Course?

A Guide To The Application

The application consists of a series of standard informational questions (e.g., name, date of birth, address, passport, GPA, etc.), and then has four short answer fields where you are asked to describe previous international experience and an essay about why your rationale for wanting to participate in the course.

Be deliberate in writing your essay. Over the last few years of applications, a common characteristic of the most successful applications is using the essay effectively to describe how participating in this field course will help you acheive your goals. You do not have to be or want to be an ecologist to write a successful essay. But, we strongly encourage you to take your time and detail how this course will foster your career development. Remember that this is ultimately a field research course (4-5 days at the ACTS canopy walkway doing field ecology). But, we also have a considerable cultural emphasis. There are lots of ways to make a compelling case for your participation.

Talk with students who have taken the course previously. At least some of the students from previous years will be at the information session, and you may know some already. The more you know about the course, the better you will be able to articulate how participation will advance and/or broaden your horizons.

Pay attention to details. Because the application itself is an online form, it has restrictions on special characters and what characters are allowed in any particular field. For example, no numbers are allowed in names, and no letters are allowed in you student ID number or phone number. Your phone number must also have two dashes (e.g. 502-123-4567).

When you submit your application, any errors will be flagged and you will need to return to the application to complete it. When it is complete, you will be shown your entry for final submission approval.

Once you reach the "Success!" screen of the main application, your application has been received.
