Student Evaluations

Numerical Student Evaluations

Student evaluations are based on 13 Likert-style questions (1-5, 1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree), and open-ended written feedback. The graph below shows the percentage of responses of all students to all 13 questions (representing 82 students in all the courses I have taught where numerical evaluations were offered (out of 161, or ~50% response rate)). The numerical values in the table below are averages 8 class medians.

Written Student Evaluations

Chemical Ecology
- I have never wanted to participate more than in courses taught by this professor. I feel welcome and that my thoughts/responses are valid even if I'm not always sure they're correct.
- One of the most genuine instructors I have ever had the pleasure of taking. Dr Frost is always willing to find time to work/help with whatever you need. His passion for the material carries over into his lectures and makes for a wonderful learning environment.
- Dr Frost is your ideal college instructor. He uses his passion and drive for the subject which makes for a contagious learning environment. We need more instructors like Dr Frost at the university, especially in the biology department. Keep up the good work Dr Frost and thank you for everything you have done this semester.
- Your enthusiasm and discussion are wonderful and I plan to incorporate them into my teaching method when I TA and certainly when I (hopefully) become a professor.
- I've taken a lot more biology classes than I needed to and have been taught by almost everyone in the department, so I have a pretty big reference frame in saying this. I personally find your teaching style to be the best out of every other instructor I've had, at least to my specific learning style. Instead of lecturing us on the material, I find that I've learned much more by wrestling with the content myself and having the gaps filled in during class. Granted, this is a survey course, but I've taken other primary literature based classes that took a much different approach to covering articles. The role of an educator should be to teach information that a student couldn't otherwise learn, so I never feel like I'm wasting my time by being present in class. Your passion for chemical ecology made a subject that I initially would have avoided seem so much more interesting, and I wish other professors expressed that genuine interest in the subjects they teach. I've never had to reach out to you for help on course content, but you haven't been inaccessible.
- I think Dr. Frost works to encourage students where they are, his feedback was always instructive, I only wish I had received more feedback, especially with our perspectives piece. The assignments were great. I enjoyed presenting topics I found to be fascinating with the class.
- He is so enthusiastic about his students learning, and makes it easier for us to understands complex concepts by putting them into perspective.
- Dr. Frost is great, he is very smart and obviously knows what he is talking about in the biology, ecology, and chemistry that underlies the course. He also engages the class well and is a teacher that makes students excited to go to class. Excellent course, excellent instructor. His passion for the subject is contagious
- I liked his teaching style, especially how casual he makes the class, it takes the pressure off participation. I also really appreciated his grading style. It was obvious at the beginning that some of us have taken only one ecology class, and he took that into consideration when grading assignments. I was extremely worried about making good grades in this class (with my lack of understanding of ecology), but I'm not having that problem. Also leniency towards assignments was also very helpful and appreciated. A lot of teachers shove every assignment into the last month of the semester and it made things much less stressful.
- Frost is a great professor in the sense of knowing his stuff but he can be random and farfetched when it comes to designing exam questions.
- Dr. Frost is an excellent instructor. His discussion-based teaching style made this one of the most interesting courses I have taken.
- Dr. Frost is a great professor and he is really good at facilitating conversation even when noone feels like talking. I think it would perhaps encourage undergraduates to speak up more if he "graded" them on their participation every class so that they talk at least once per class. Otherwise, this has been an awesome class and I have learned a lot.
- Dr. Frost has created a phenomenal course that is complimented perfectly by his unyielding enthusiasm for chemical ecology and critical thinking, as well as his good-hearted disposition to the well-being of his students. In addition, he guides a dynamic class perfectly (as far as I can tell), where every discussion is meaningful and interesting. I really enjoyed this class and I sincerely looked forward to every class, something I have never thought possible.
- Professor is accommodating to these not extremely well versed in ecology.
- Dr. Frost is an excellent instructor and is 100% invested in the success of his students and their understanding of the material, and of biology and chemistry as a whole. A great teacher and mentor. I would recommend any class offered with Dr. Frost as an instructor.
- He is a great professor. He genuinely cares about his students and wants to make sure that everyone reaches their full potential. However, my only complaint is that he does not return graded material in a timely manner.
- Dr. Frost has been very helpful, accessible, and quick to evaluate.
- Dr. Frost has a great personality and is always helpful and passionate about the material.
- Dr. Frost has been extremely accessible and helpful when I needed his assistance.
- I think you are very approachable and take a lot of time to break down difficult concepts. However, I wish the work expectations for assignments were clearer, especially with the discussion leader assignment.
- Very clear.
- Dr. Frost is very motivated to teach. I love his style of teaching. He engages his students very well. He is helpful and accessible. Sometimes, he does not reply an email.
- Dr. Frost is very enthusiastic and great at leading discussions based on the interests of the entire class.
- I love that this course is obviously a higher level class and I love reading and discussing important literature. Dr. Frost definitely facilitates a good environment for discussion. He is helpful in class, but sometimes does not respond well to emails and work sometimes takes a long time to get graded. But overall, this hasn't been a problem.
- Dr. Frost has been extremely helpful and fun to learn under. He evaluates work fairly and within a reasonable timeframe.
- Quick response to emails. Good with referring back to important themes and emphasizing what is important to understand from the course.
- Made expectations of participation very clear and gave lots of very helpful advice
- You were very approachable for help, and I appreciate how clearly you communicated with the class (both inside class and via email). There were times when your deadline leniency was a saving grace, but I'm also glad some deadlines were firm. I hope you continue to strike a similar balance for future students; they should really appreciate it.
- Great at returning feedback, encouraging student contributions, answering any questions, and facilitating classroom discussions.
- Dr. Frost was sure to explain the content well and was always willing to help when anyone didn't needed more instruction. The class felt like everyone was on an equal level and had a very casual dynamic.
- Dr. Frost is the perfect professor for this course. His personality makes the classroom and inviting place to participate.
- Dr. Frost is very enthusiastic about this class, and in turn made me more excited to learn!
Advanced Ecology
- Very good at communicating concepts, and giving students the opportunity to reach the conclusions themselves.
- Structured the class in a way that facilitates learning key scientific skills that students will find difficult to learn in most classes.
- Extremely inspiring
- I appreciated the enthusiasm during lecture. It was also nice to hear that the process of learning to think about science is important.

- This professor encouraged participation to make class more exciting and concepts easier to understand.
- Made the course interesting and feel like a group effort. Encouraged class participation and was great all around.
- Extremely helpful, and I appreciate the emphasis on just trying to understand concepts and that the class is more than just exam grades.
- Very helpful and kind. You can tell Dr. Frost enjoys teaching and will do anything he can to help the students
- Was very helpful and accessible. Also was able to provide the information in the course, and its demands with proper clarity.
- Dr. Frost has been clear and helpful and has guided the class towards a more fundamental understanding of ecological concept and interactions. He is accessible and fair.
- Very available, down to earth, and easy to ask questions with answers that I can understand. One of my few biology professors that actually listens to and utilizes students during lecture, not just talk down to us, which I greatly appreciate.
- Dr. Frost is a very energetic teacher who is very passionate about the material. He wants to see his students strive by trying to get us to interpret the material ourselves and then helping us where we are stuck. He brings a lot of life to the class and is always available for feedback.

- Dr. Frost is an amazing instructor, he has a great amount of pride in making sure we understand and enjoy the content. I would definitely recommend him to other students.

- The instructor has been clear and helpful, and accessible. He has been prompt in a returning information and maintaining an ordered class.
- Class is awesome and fun. sometimes reading becomes a bit demanding when it comes to reading as in depth as I want and when I have assignments or upcoming tests for other subjects.
- Dr. Frost is clearly passionate, knowledgeable, and desires teaching the course which can be understood in a long-lasting way. With such an intimate class size, he takes advantage of class discussion, lab exercises, and other methods which allow for thorough understanding of the material.. and from what he has expressed, I feel that is his goal as a professor of plant biology.

- dr frost is a very nice professor that really cares about the learning of his students and he is very motivated by his job he always seems excited when teaching which is what you want in a professor. i really enjoyed his extra credit opportunities because who doesn't love extra credit and it was a way for me to get to learn things beyond what we talk about in class

- Dr. Frost was very excited for each and every one of his lectures. His attitude really persuaded the way that I thought about the class. One of his strengths is that he was very understanding. I'm very appreciative and very grateful considering I had other instructors who didn't demonstrate this same attitude.
