"Education is not the filling of a pail, but rather the lighting of a fire."
--William Butler Yeats

Whether in a forest canopy, a laboratory, or a classroom, I love teaching plant biology and chemical ecology. I love teaching students who are already interested in plants, and I also love inspiring students who are new to the wonders of the diverse ways that plants interact with their environment. Throughout my career, I have been involved in the development, instruction, and evaluation of courses targeting a broad range of academic experience ranging from middle and high school science exploration to undergraduate and graduate education. I am particularly interested in integrating teaching with the design and implementation of research projects worthy of publication in the scientific literature. This is a lofty goal for a classroom environment, but the goal is to think as scientists and develop strategies for life-long scholarship. I strive in all my teaching to provide a robust platform in ecological knowledge and, hopefully, generate environmentally minded citizens and the next generation of ecological scientists. My teaching also strives to balance concepts fundamental to biology with a broader application to environmental science. These are all valuable skills regardless of the profession or avocation students eventually pursue.
